A solar power system is made up of the following components:
Solar panels – the most important part of the system and make up the majority of the cost of the system.
Inverter – converts DC electricity generated at the panels into 110V AC power which can be used in your home or exported to the grid.
Mounting system – physically connects the solar panels to your roof.
Electrical components – include cables, isolators, breakers, and switches. (sometimes referred to as the “Balance of System”).
While all of the components that make
up a solar power system are very important, the solar panels are particularly important as they make up the largest cost of the system and produce electricity, are the largest driver of system performance, and are the most difficult to fix if something were to go wrong.

DC-to-AC inverters: Inverters take the low-voltage, high-current signals from the
PV panels and convert them into 120VAC (or 240 VAC), which is directly compatible with grid power. Inverters cost around $0.70 per watt or around $2,600 for a typical application. From a reliability standpoint, they are generally the weak link in any PV system, so quality is a must.

Disconnect switches are of critical importance, and they need to be mounted within easy reach. Every member of your family should know exactly how to turn the PV system off for safety reasons. If any abnormal behavior occurs in your home’s electrical system, shut off the solar system first.
